Beatrix Potter

I remember I used to half believe and wholly play with fairies when I was a child. What heaven can be more real than to retain the spirit-world of childhood, tempered and balanced by knowledge and common-sense...

Beatrix Potter’s Journal, 17 November 1896

News came about that there was a film script being developed on Beatrix's life. I knew it would make for an excellent screenplay, her passion for watercolours and her imagination would bring excitement in any documentary or film. Though I feared the film would fail had its original cast developed in to the cinema. Cate Blanchett was cast originally as Beatrix Potter herself, but due to her acceptance and other commitments to prior productions she would not be able to make it. Cate asked the talented other Aussie on the production, Chris Noonan - Director to delay filming to allow her to commit to her current schedule and fulfill her interest in portraying Potter. Many people including Chris believe Cate to be one of the greatest actors of all time. A big call to make, and inspiring to hear that Australians are doing so well in Hollywood. But I personally don't like pasty face Cate or her acting. I'm yet to see her play a role that can impress me with her skills outside of the drone like roles she's inhabited to date. Gratefully she didn't do this film. Little texan and a personal favourite Renee Zellweger has created an awesome character portrayal in Miss Potter. Cheers to Renee!

On a separate note, I found a short film of interest to those who like short film work. It's around 5 minutes long and very entertaining. It's about a sheepdog who's afraid of sheep, but has a definite passion for making love to cows. She may not be the hardest working farm dog, but her family loves her just the same. Check it out...

Animation greats passing

2007 has seen a flurry of activity. But sadly it has seen the passing of two greats from the animation industry. Iwao Takamoto passed away on January 8th from a massive heart attack. I met Iwao on a visit he made to Sydney some time ago now. Lovely gentleman and truly a great talent that gave us many of the classic elements in memories of nearly every animator today.

Another relatively unknown great from the industry is Harvey Cohen, composer. Yet another heart attack victim, passing away on January 14th.

Cohen received Emmy Awards for his musical direction and composition work in two TV animated shows: The Adventures of Batman and Robin: A Bullet For Bullock, and Disney's Aladdin. Among the films and televisions shows for which Cohen created music were Sex and The City, South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, The Wonder Years, Dallas, and Down With Love. Cohen also arranged music for recording artists such as Kenny G and The Irish Tenors.

I first met Brett years ago when I first started the business of Toon Studio with a colleague. Adam was a close friend of Brett's and he came to visit the studio. I knew back then he could play guitar but didn't think it would go as far as doing this....
